Course Aims

To enable those responsible for taking the designated lead role for safeguarding and child protection in the early years to understand their role and responsibilities.
The course content will explore the key elements of the role which are to identify, help and support, protect, and manage.
Content is underpinned by current safeguarding and child protection legislation and Government statutory guidance for those working in the early years.
The training will enable and support learners to be compliant, competent, and confident within their role.

Identify:
Key legislation – The Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework. Government statutory guidance. Thresholds of need. Learning from case reviews. Safeguarding and child protection themes.

Help and support:
The principles of early help and intervention. Early help processes and procedures. Principles of multi-agency practice. Multi agency practice and early help. Information sharing. Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Multi agency practice and child in need.

Protect:
Legislation and statutory guidance. Understanding risk and protective factors. Working with parents. Making a referral to children’s service social care. Working with social care, multi agency practice.

Manage:
Safeguarding policies and procedures. Effective systems, record keeping and writing reports. Escalation and resolving professional disagreements. Safer working practices. Allegations against professionals or adults working with children.

Who Should Attend?

All staff who have a responsibility for designated safeguarding lead, deputy or part of a safeguarding team

How long does the certificate last?

Training for Designated Safeguarding Leads needs to be updated every two years, with an annual knowledge & skills update in between.
