Forest School Short Courses

Our forest school and outdoor learning short courses are delivered by our experienced forest school leaders, who have a passion for learning through the natural environment. With over 20 short courses and workshops available, we are confident you will be able to find training that suits your needs, whether you are an experienced forest school leader or a professional wanting to develop your understanding of forest school and/or outdoor learning. 

Due to the wide range of training on offer and the different environments needed for each course, our forest school and outdoor learning courses may take place in one of three locations (please refer to each course to confirm the location of it):

  • Acorn Training Centre, Milton Keynes (MK4 4DE) - Usually indoors
  • Salcey Forest, Northants (NN7 2HX) - Usually outdoors
  • Acorn at Jubilee Wood, Milton Keynes (MK6 2LB) - Usually outdoors

An Introduction to Fire

Summary:

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively introduce fire to your Outdoor Learning provisions, from learning to manage the risks, to developing your fire lighting skills, to maximising the learning opportunities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand how to effectively assess and manage the risks
  • Develop the skills to safely light and maintain fires using different methods
  • Learn how to deliver some educational activities using the fire

An Introduction to Forest School

Summary:

This course will introduce you to the forest school ethos and will help you to develop some of the skills and knowledge required to enhance learning in the outdoors. The course is theory based and is not a forest school qualification.

Learning Outcomes:

  • You will develop an understanding of the principles and ethos of Forest School, and understand the structure of a forest school session
  • You will develop your understanding of the woodland environment, including identification of species, uses of different natural resources, and understanding the impact of educational activities on the environment

Camp fire cooking

This practical course is aimed at people with a previous knowledge of fire, although beginners and novices are welcome. This course will cover a wide range of cooking techniques and give the participants a chance to try new recipes. It will help provide practical recipes to use back at your setting. Each participant will also receive Acorns Campfire Cooking booking with recipes and instructions.
